Mahalia Jackson was long considered a champion of the equal rights movement in the late 50's till the day she died in 1972. Having grown up in New Orleans Mahalia Jackson was a local as well as a national celebrity. Hurricane Katrina closed the Mahalia Jackson Theatre 14 feet of flooding. Thanks to a generous contribution for 25 million dollars from FEMA and 2 years of hard work the Mahalia Jackson is back open and ready to go for the 2011 season.
